Full Spectrum vs Broad Spectrum CBD

Full Spectrum vs Broad Spectrum CBD

In your search for a natural addition to your wellness routine, you will notice the terms ‘Broad Spectrum’ and ‘Full Spectrum’ CBD. The two are similar, but not the same. Whereas Full Spectrum products can legally contain up to 0.3% THC, Broad Spectrum contains 0.0% THC. That’s important to know if your work or sports regime includes regular testing. Learn more about the science and process behind the two varieties and why all our products are Broad Spectrum CBD.

Shared Properties of Full Spectrum and Broad Spectrum CBD

As with Full Spectrum CBD, Broad Spectrum delivers the benefits of natural hemp cannabinoids, including cannabidiol (CBD) and cannabigerol (CBG). The latter is the stem cannabinoid that breaks down in the hemp plant to produce all the others. Although it is found in only tiny amounts in the finished product, it interacts directly with brain receptors, unlike CBD, which interacts indirectly. Broad Spectrum also retains all the soothing aromas of these natural terpenes:

Broad Spectrum terpenes

  • Isopulegol - responsible for the minty aroma; this terpene is also found in lemongrass.
  • Geraniol - used in many fragrances, it adds rose oil and citronella notes.
  • Eucalyptol - refreshing minty aroma with cooling properties.
  • Caryophyllene - adds a spicy clove warmth, the reason it is also used in many anti-inflammatory products.

You can check the levels of terpenes, CBD and CBG in each of our Broad Spectrum products on the lab reports. The same is not the case for many Full Spectrum blends. A lack of standardized testing structure means that unless your product has been third-party tested, there’s no guarantee of how much CBD, CBG, or terpenes a Full Spectrum blend contains.

How Both CBD Varieties Impact the Body

The CBD in both Full and Broad Spectrum products interacts with receptors in the brain that regulate mood, metabolism and immune function. The presence of THC in Full Spectrum triggers the CB1 receptor in the brain, potentially producing psychoactive effects, although this is rarely the case for levels below 0.3 percent. The idea that only Full Spectrum CBD can deliver the so-called “entourage effect” is a myth. Both varieties comprise the balance of flavonoids, terpenes and cannabinoids to achieve the entourage effect.
